The British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc. has been formed to oversee the planning for and development of the British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square and, thereafter, to preserve the integrity and spirit of the completed Garden in cooperation with the City of New York. As an independent not-for-profit entity the Trust has its own responsible officers as well as a governance body which includes among its members representatives of the British Consulate-General New York and the St. George’s Society of New York.

Arthur J. Rawl MBE, OStJ, CPA
Chairman

Arthur J. Rawl MBE, OStJ, CPA serves as Chairman of the British Memorial Garden Trust and formerly served as its Treasurer. He has also served as President of the Englewood, New Jersey Board of Education and Treasurer of the New Jersey Historical Society as well as serving in a number of other civic and charitable capacities.

Mr. Rawl, Chairman of Rawl & Associates LLC, formerly was President & CEO and director of the Brazil American Auto Group LP, a Sao Paulo-based venture capital funded consolidator of the South American automobile retailing sector and previously served as Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer of Penske Auto Group (NYSE). He is a retired partner in the firm of Deloitte & Touche, LLP.

Mr. Rawl is a graduate of Boston University where for five years he was a member of the graduate business faculty. He is frequently called upon to speak and write on financial and corporate governance matters and serves on the Board of Directors of three public companies. Mr. Rawl served in the United States Navy from 1960-1963.

Camilla G. Hellman, MBE
President & CEO

Camilla G. Hellman, MBE, is President and CEO of British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc. and the visionary behind the British Memorial Garden. Founded in 2002, in conjunction with the British Consulate-General and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the City of New York, the British Memorial Garden is a major capital improvement campaign.

Ms. Hellman has assembled business experts and community leaders to fulfill the mission of this exciting international project. She is the spokesperson for the garden, and has been interviewed by such leading electronic media as the BBC, CBS, Sky TV, ABC as well as international print outlets.

Managing a professional staff, volunteers and board members, Ms. Hellman has led the $7.5 million fundraising campaign for the overall construction of the garden and the maintenance endowment.

Ms. Hellman’s professional background is in management, marketing and brand development, representing leading designer brands in the home fashion sector for Liberty of London, Ralph Lauren Home and Etro Home Collection. She was born and educated in England, and is the granddaughter of Sir Bertam Galer, a former Chairman of the Great London Council.

Ms. Hellman was made a Member of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in spring 2007 for her services to British/American relations. She is a governor of the board of India House Club and a member of the Pilgrims Society of America.

Rodney N.M. Johnson, MBE
Vice President

Rodney N.M. Johnson is President Emeritus of the St. George's Society of New York. Mr. Johnson joined the Society in 1977. Mr. Johnson was educated in London. After school and completing military service with the Royal Engineers in Germany, he spent the majority of his working life with Jaeger, the international designer apparel company, leading the company through a period of substantial growth as President and CEO.

After retirement from Jaeger, Mr. Johnson worked on a number of marketing assignments for European companies and is currently involved in the commercial real estate industry with the William Pitt organization based in Stamford, Connecticut.

Mr. Johnson’s private activities include serving as an officer and director of the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc. and the board of Christian Outreach at the United Church of Rowayton.

Dominic Meiklejohn, OBE
Deputy Consul-General, British Consulate in New York

Prior to assuming his post as Deputy Consul-General of the British Consulate in New York, Mr. Meiklejohn was with the Change Unit at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Before that, he was Deputy Consul-General in Basra, Knowledge Management Programme Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Deputy Head, Environmental Policy Department, FCO and First Secretary at the British Embassy in Warsaw.

In the 1990s Mr. Meiklejohn was Head, India Team, FCO, OSCE at the Albania Mission and Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Warsaw. He has also served in the European Community Department and in HM Customs and Excise. He is a graduate of Merton College, Oxford and received his OBE in 2007.

Diana M. Collins
Director, and Chairman Development and Fund Raising

Diana Collins who chairs the Development and Fundraising committee, is also on the Executive Committee for the British Memorial Garden Trust, currently is part of the Global Proposal Team in the Cash Flow Advisory Group at ABN AMRO Bank NV, the largest bank in the Netherlands, in its New York office. Her other volunteer activities include: Annual Participant in the Principal for a Day Program in New York City since 1994; Director of the Board, Lubin School of Business Alumni Association, Pace University; Member of the American Friends of the London School of Economics and Patron of the Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theatre.

Ms. Collins holds a B.Sc. degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and an MBA in Banking and Finance from Pace University, New York.

Peter Hopkinson, FAIA
Director

Peter Hopkinson is vice president and principal architect with DMJM + Harris, an international engineering and architecture firm. He is currently the chief architect for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s East Side Access Project Terminal for the Long Island Railroad at Grand Central Terminal. Mr. Hopkinson is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, past president of the Boston Society of Architects, a building committee member of the St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue and a member of the St. George’s Society of New York.

He is a member of The College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, past President of The Boston Society of Architects, a building committee member of The St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, and a member of The St. Georges Society.

He has a BA and MFA in Architecture from Princeton University.

Joseph A. Smith
Director

Mr. Smith is a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, a law firm that provides legal services to the British Memorial Garden Trust on a pro bono basis.

Robert W. Thompson
Secretary/Treasurer

Robert W. Thompson is the Secretary and Treasurer of the British Memorial Garden Trust.

Mr. Thompson is a partner in Tatum Partners, a national professional services firm providing senior level skills, experience and leadership to companies in transition. Prior to that, he was Vice President, Finance of United Auto Group, Inc.

He has an MBA from Rutgers University and a BA from Monmouth University.

John Kinnear, AIA
Project Manager

John Kinnear maintains a general architectural practice in both project types and styles in New York City, Connecticut, and Dutchess County, NY with occasional projects throughout the United States. Recent residential projects include the restoration of eighteenth and nineteenth century homes, as well as new homes built with traditional materials. His work has been published in professional architectural and interior design publications, and his work for Credit Suisse at One Liberty Plaza in New York City won a national design award.

Mr. Kinnear is a Vice President of the American Friends of the Georgian Group, Chairman of the Architectural Committee in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and Chairman of the Building Committee for the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc. at Hanover Square in New York City.

Mr. Kinnear earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Pratt Institute. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, a registered architect in New York and Connecticut, and certified by the National Council of Registration Boards.

Isabel and Julian Bannerman
Landscape Architects

The landscape architecture team of Julian and Isabel Bannerman has worked in partnership in garden design and building restoration since 1982. In an invitational competition held in 2003, the firm was chosen to design the British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square, their first major American commission. The Bannermans were chosen for the project because of the originality and fluidity of their design which combines traditional and modern elements of English gardens, including topiaries, boxwood, yew hedges and flower beds.

Married since 1982, the Bannermans have worked together on garden and building restoration and design for over twenty years. They have twice been gold medal winners at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Garden Show (1993 and 1994) and designed grounds and out buildings for such renowned locations as Sydmonton Court, Waddesdon Manor, Leeds Castle, Houghton Hall and Knepp Castle. The British Memorial Garden is their first U.S. commission.

In 2003 the Bannermans were awarded a Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales for their outstanding work for the British Royal Family over the past several years, most notably for their ongoing work at Highgrove in Gloucestershire.

Mathews Nielsen
U.S. Landscape Architects

Mathews Nielsen is an award-winning firm providing landscape architecture, comprehensive planning, and site design services for clients throughout the United States. Projects include master plans for educational institutions, site plans for residential communities and commercial centers, landscape designs for institutional and corporate facilities, and environmental assessments for parks and transportation corridors.

The principals of the firm, Ms. Kim Mathews and Ms. Signe Nielsen, have worked together since 1983 and guide a professional staff of landscape architects, urban designers, environmental planners, horticulturalists and project managers. Among the projects currently undertaken by Matthews Nielsen are the revitalization of Lincoln Center, the permanent World Trade Center PATH station and a new hotel on Spring Street in SoHo.

Simon Verity
Sculptor, stonework

One of Britain’s leading sculptors, Simon Verity works are in such public collections as the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as in the private collections of such people as HRH The Prince of Wales, Sir Elton John, Lord Rothschild, the Countess of Rosse, the Duke of Beaufort, Sir Roy Strong and Count Badeni.

His architectural work can be seen at the Wells Cathedral, in Bath, at Exeter Cathedral and at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He is also known for his memorials and inscriptions for such noteworthy persons as Nancy Mitford, John Betjeman, James Pope Hennessey and Lancelot Andrews in Winchester Cathedral.

Simon Verity was educated at Marlborough College and studied under both Oliver Hill FRIBA and Robert Baker RCA. He was the 1980 recipient of the Winston Churchill Fellowship. Verity’s work will be seen throughout the future British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square in New York City.

Anish Kapoor, RA
Sculptor, the Unity Sculpture

Anish Kapoor, RA, is one of the most renowned and influential sculptors of his generation. Born in Bombay, he has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Tate Gallery (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Renia Sofia (Madrid) and the Stedlijk (Amsterdam). Anish Kapoor won the Premio 2000 when he was represented at the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennial and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1991 among other honors and awards.

His sculpture – entitled “Unity”— for the British Memorial Garden is his first major public commission for New York City. He won the commission in a juried competition against other leading British artists who were asked to create a memorial design based on the concept of unity between the United States and the United Kingdom.
